We don't want "dagbon" here -Nungua Chiefs To Gov't

THE Nungua Traditional Council (NTC) has cautioned the office of the Attorney-General and the powers-that-be to desist from any action or attempt aimed at imposing a destooled Chief, Nii Odai Ayiku IV, on them.

According to the Council, "any action to re-install the destooled chief is tantamount to preparing the grounds to smuggle what happened at Dagbon recently to Nungua."

Speaking on behalf of NTC at a press conference in Nungua last Thursday, the Chief of Katamansu, Nii Otu Akwetey IX, stated that, "the Nungua stool is not a bona fide property of the former Chief, Nii Ayiku IV.

He said the NTC cannot afford the luxury of using their scarce resources for conflict resolution. Giving a background to the destoolment of the former Chief of Nungua, Nii Akwetey made it known that Nii Odai Ayiku IV was enstooled in 1958 at the age of 18. He reigned till 1967 when he was customarily destooled.

He claimed, however, that because the former chief exploited his good relationship with top government officials as well as those in charge of security apparatus he managed to cling to power from 1967 to 1983.

According to the chief of Katamansu, Nii Ayiku’s tenure of office was characterised by anarchy, intimidation, harassment and frivolous detentions of those who expressed dissenting opinions, which the people of Nungua do not want repeated.

He said there were also sharp divisions between the two factions of Nungua, i.e. Sanshie and Amanfa during the reign of Ayiku IV.

This, he said, caused the collapse of marriages and social cohesion in the traditional area. When The Heritage contacted the Deputy Attorney-General, Miss Gloria Akuffo, she said the allegations did not contain enough facts to enable her react to them.

She asked to be furnished with the title of the case, Suit Number and details of the case. The Heritage has also learnt that the destooled chief is currently in London doing some pastoral work.
