'We have limited time to vet 4 new Supreme Court Judges' – Appointment Committee

Minority Chief Whip and Member of Parliament’s Appointment Committee Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak has raised concerns over the inadequate time to vet the President’s four nominees to the Supreme Court.

President Akufo Addo on Tuesday nominated Justice Samuel K. Marful-Sau, Justice of Appeal, Justice Agnes M. A. Dordzie, Justice of Appeal, Prof. Nii Ashie Kotey, former Dean, Faculty of Law, University of Ghana, Legon, and Nene A. O. Amegatcher, Private legal practitioner and former President of the Ghana Bar Association to the Supreme Court.

Per the constitution, the four nominees are to be vetted by Parliament before being approved to sit on the Apex Court of the land.

Ahead of the vetting, Hon. Muntaka stated that he’s not sure there enough time to do a thorough job.

“Usually what will happen is that we’ll meet and first determine how long should the period be for the seeking of memoranda while we at that time also do our background checks. Once that is determined then we can set a particular date for the vetting, my worry is that we’re about three weeks from rising and we may want all these things done before we rise. I would have really preferred that it had come earlier because when we rise now we’re not coming back until October so it puts us in a very difficult situation,” He told Joy FM.
