President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has re-echoed his government is in the process of enacting a law to protect the NPP government’s flagship Free SHS policy.

This he claims will bar a new government from reviewing the programme should the New Patriotic Party (NPP) lose the presidential elections in the future.

“We are going to enact a legislation to make access to SHS compulsory for every school going child. This will ensure that those who have pledged in their dreams to ‘review the free SHS policy’ do not get the chance to destroy this policy in the very unlikely event that they return,” the president said, while addressing a graduation ceremony at the University of Development Studies (UDS) at Tamale in the Northern region, Saturday.

Critics say there is the possibility of politicians toying with the policy in future hence the need for a legal framework to back it.

Senior Law lecturer , Dr. Raymond Atuguba, had argued that “with a binding national development plan, once you put in the plan that every government must work progressively towards free SHS, then no government can scrap the policy.”
