Nana Kwame Bediako, the Presidential candidate for the New Force Movement, has announced plans to introduce an embargo on foreign goods to safeguard Ghanaian businesses.
This announcement came following his meeting with the Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) on May 21, 2024, in Accra, where he pledged to address their concerns in his manifesto.
Bediako underscored the detrimental impact of unchecked importation on local traders, stressing the need to regulate the market to support indigenous businesses.
"We must industrialize to develop Ghana," he emphasized, highlighting his administration's commitment to creating an enabling environment for business growth, particularly for the youth.
During discussions with GUTA President Dr. Joseph Obeng, several challenges facing traders and businesses were addressed, including high inflation and excessive taxes.
Dr. Obeng emphasized the necessity for business leaders to play a more significant role in governance to stimulate economic growth, asserting, "It is time for business-minded people to take over the leadership of this nation."
Echoing these sentiments, Bediako emphasized the urgent need for economic reform, especially in light of the weakening cedi and rising inflation rates. He called for a governance model focused on internal wealth creation and criticized policies that enrich foreign nationals at the expense of local businesses.
