The Northern Regional Police Command is calling for strong four-wheel drive vehicles to help them combat crime by the patrol in the remote areas of the Region.

This call comes in the wake the renewed clashes in Chereponi, where one died and several others injured following the Anufus and Kokombas fighting each other.

The police said it will need over 10 4X4 vehicles to enable them to patrol the remote areas of Chereponi since that area is very big.

The Northern Regional Police Public Relations Officer (PRO), DSP Mohammed Yussif Tanko, made the call in an interview on Onua FM’s Yen Sempa hosted by Bright Kwasi Asempa on Monday.

DSP Tanko was explaining what exactly caused the renewed clash, which also resulted in several homes razed down.

The violence was said to have started on Friday evening when some unknown assailants opened fire on Nawieku, a Chokosi community in the district, injuring one person.

The following day, 75 military personnel and 40 police officers were deployed to the area after reports of a possible reprisal attack.

DSP Tanko noted that police have been drawn from Tamale, Bawku and other parts of the Northern Region “but we need 4×4 vehicles which are strong because they can go to where the smaller vehicles cannot go”.

He added: “If we can get ten or more because the place is very big and the vehicles we have cannot move to some places”.
