The Deputy Minister of Sanitation, Michael Gyato has said that the gap between the waste collection and its management calls for more innovative ways.

According to him, the value chain of waste in a 360 degrees cycle is full of business opportunities which can accommodate all the unemployed youth in the country if only we can see waste as wealth and accord it the required attention.

“We need innovative ways to convert waste into energy, recycling of plastic waste among others”

Mr. Gyato tasked all players in the waste management business to step up their game adding that the gap between waste generation, collection, and recycling calls for more equipment, human resource and technology

“It is estimated that every Ghanaian generates 0.5kilograms of waste per day which means 13 thousand 500 tons of waste are generated across the country daily and only 60% of it are collected daily so what happens to the remaining 40%” he quizzed.

The deputy minister called on other stakeholders to come into the field of sanitation.

“The ministry calls for other people to venture into waste collection and management, we need more companies to help in waste collection and management” he said.

The minister was speaking at the handing over ceremony of 500 vehicles from Zoom lion to various Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies across the country in Accra on Friday, August 31st.
