We need spot fines for citizens who dump waste at unauthorised places - NPP man

A member of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Oliver Ofori Baah has supported the president Akufo-Addo’s call that in spite of infrastructure deficit our attitudinal change must be the first call to address the endemic sanitation menace in the country.

In an interview with Kwabena Agyapong on Rainbow Radio 87.5 FM he said Ghanaians abroad abide by the rules and regulations over there but in our own country, we treat it undesirably.

We must treat sanitation issues devoid of party politics or else it will be difficult to tackle this issue, Baah said.

He called on government to set up laws specifically to fine anybody caught in the act of throwing refuse at unspecified areas by so doing it will serve as deterrent for others.

"Ghanaians have a habit of throwing their refuse the gutters anytime it rains but we don’t bring these people to book for the law to deal with them because of their affiliation to those people,’’ he bemoaned.

He called on society watch dogs to see this sanitation issue as a threat causing the out outbreak of cholera, malaria and other sanitation related issues.

He pleaded with Ghanaians to avoid the practice of dumping waste generated from their homes into the wayside dustbins while those bins are specifically meant to tackle waste on the street.

He concluded by calling Ghanaians to desist from throwing refuse into any uncompleted building in our neighborhood as good citizens.
