The All People’s Congress (APC) was not part of the demonstration organised by the Coalition of Opposition Parties in Ghana against high utility tariffs, Razak Opoku, General Secretary of the APC, has said.

This is contrary to claims by the organiser of the demonstration that the party was part of the demonstration on Monday, 22 August.

Earlier, organisers of the event had announced that the APC was part of the coalition. However, this announcement has attracted condemnation from the party.

Speaking on Class FM’s 12Live on Monday, Mr Opoku said: “I want the public and media houses to disregard that publication and treat it with a pinch of salt because APC as a political party has not gone into any coalition with registered political parties, being the ruling party or the opposition ones. So, we find it very unfortunate and very disrespectful for the organisers of the demonstration for not notifying the APC and they use our name in such a publication or such organisation. We think that they have to desist from using the name of APC in their subsequent organisation or publications, other than that they will face the legal wrath of the party.”

“APC [is an] independent political party. We are pursuing the good course of providing an alternative to the NDC. For us, we have not decided as a party at any level of our hierarchy to go into coalition with any political party for the purpose of the 2016 general elections.”
