We reject blood that do not meet safety standards – NBSG

Head of Component Lab at the National Blood Service Ghana, Evelyn Amposah-Fordjour, Ghana has said that blood from a donor is carefully screened before it is transfused to the person who needs it to avoid the transmission of diseases or infections.

She said a blood that does not meet the safety standards are rejected even after donation adding that there is no cause for alarm if blood is been transfused to another as strict safety standard is ensured to prevent the spread of diseases and infections.

Speaking to GhanaWeb in an interview, Evelyn Amposah-Fordjour, said “we reject blood donated when they don’t meet the safety standards, and we test for TTIs including syphilis, Hepatitis B and C and retro.”

“So approximately, any blood that is issued is safe. There is nothing like I took and I got infected with these diseases or infection. So every blood issued is safe.” She added.

The Lab technician also dismissed claims that blood donated to the bank are used for ritual purposes as speculated by some people in the country.

“We don’t use the blood for fetish purposes, we can’t meet the daily demand to even supply to various health facilities left alone using it for fetish purposes.”
