We still haven't been paid - Coastal Sanitation Workers fume

Some Coastal sanitation workers employed under the Youth Employment Agency, (YEA) have fumed at government's inability to pay them salaries for the past one year.

The workers who embarked on a demonstration to express their displeasure say that despite several appeals to the Agency to pay them their salaries, they have received no response or assistance.

They say life has become unbearable for them as some of them have become the breadwinners of their families and cater for their children from their salaries.

They accuse one Awal Mohammed, an officer at YEA, of hoarding their salaries and remuneration.

According to them, Awal Mohammed has been making claims in the media that all salaries owed YEA workers under the module have been paid, an issue they allege is a lie.

They have threatened more demonstrations and mass action should the Agency fail to address their concerns.

The Coastal Sanitation module of YEA was set up to maintain clean beaches and ensure a conducive environment for inhabitants and tourists.

Under this module, the youth are be trained and employed by splitting the coastline into community zones. They are expected to engage in regular cleaning of the beaches, collection and disposal of rubbish and general beautification of the coastal areas, protection of wildlife where necessary and each community is envisaged to generate its own revenue in due course through wildlife conservation and tourism.

There are over 2,000 people engaged under this module according to the YEA.

The enraged demonstrators numbered about 100 people.
