"We will not tolerate pressure from any quarter" - IGP

Tamale, Dec. 11, GNA - The Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Patrick Kwarteng Acheampong says his administration will resist pressure from any quarter with regard to the implementation of the new policies of the Ghana Police Service. He said: "Several marriage certificates have started coming in from policewomen on hearing that the new administration is going to embark on mass transfers."

"We will not tolerate any interference from any police personnel or outsiders as far as the implementation of our policies are concerned", he said adding: "I don't know whether it is only this time that they now know it is necessary to furnish the administration with their marital status."

Mr. Acheampong was interacting with newsmen in Tamale on Saturday at the end of his 10-day official visit to the Northern Region. His visit was to identify problems and challenges facing the Police personnel in the region, among other issues. The IGP also explained to the police the new policies that his administration had instituted to improve the service and met with chiefs and politicians in the communities aimed to improve relations between the police and the public.

Mr. Acheampong noted that in Northern Ghana there were few policewomen in the districts and announced that as part of the new policies, all graduates from the Police Training Schools would do their national service in the three Northern Regions. He said the syllabus of the Police Training Schools were being improved upon to produce graduates to meet international police standards while the Police Service Standing Orders were also being revised.

The IGP announced that the government had sourced two million dollars from the Indian government and eight million the Spanish government to procure vehicles and equipment to enhance the work of the police. He said his administration had earmarked six of the vehicles for the Northern Region to facilitate their operations, adding that Yendi and Tamale had since been given one vehicle each due to the peculiar situation in those areas.
