We will safeguard electoral rules-NDC

Kumasi, Nov. 11, GNA - The NDC has stated that it will use all legal and constitutional means to safeguard the electoral rules of the country.

It said the Electoral Commission (EC) was the only constitutional body mandated to organise elections and declare results in the country and would therefore, not allow any particular political party to allocate to itself the power to declare election results in the 2008 elections as happened in the 2004 general elections.

Mr. Baba Jamal, NDC Deputy General Secretary stated this in Kumasi on Saturday at the beginning of the vetting of persons who have filed nominations to contest as candidates for the constituencies in the Ashanti Region.

He said the party had made its position clear that it would not accept that in the 2008 elections, adding, "if they declare, we will also declare".

Baba Jamal said the party was surprised at the manner people were rushing to file their nominations to contest the parliamentary elections on the party's ticket and pointed out that it showed the rejuvenated interest in the party.

Mr Daniel Ohene Agyekum, Ashanti Regional chairman of the party, said the enthusiasm with which people rushed to file their nominations debunked the assertion by some people that the party was dead in the region, adding that, the party had men and women in all the constituencies vying for the seats.

He said seven constituencies had completed all the necessary processes for the vetting exercise to begin. They are Obuasi, Old Tafo-Pankrono, Subin, Ahafo Ano North, Oforikrom, Kwadaso and Fomena. Mr Ohene Agyekum said the party was following the processes carefully to ensure that the best candidates emerged in all the constituencies to win the elections.

He said the party was poised to win the 2008 elections and advised the contestants who might lose in the primaries to accept the decision of the delegates and refrain from acts that could cause divisions in the party, adding that the party could not afford the situation where it would be divided along personal lines.
