The Archbishop of the Kumasi Diocese of the Anglican church and Primate of the Church of the Province of West Africa Very Reverend Professor Yinka Safo has asked the President Nana Akufo-Addo to ignore people threatening to vote against him for fighting against illegal small scale mining popularly known as galamsey.

According to the clergyman, the President can be assured of the votes of his church members if he continues to fight the menace which has destroyed large tracks of land and polluted water bodies across the country.

The Very Reverend Professor Yinka Safo gave the charge in Kumasi when leadership of all churches in the Ashanti region met to declare their stance against the galamsey menace.

“Normally what we hear is that when any government is taking a decision and people are not doing the right things, they will say if you want to insist, we will not vote for you. But as for the galamsey, we hear and our church members will like to support the government. And we will like to say that if the President keeps on fighting this menace, we will rather vote for him the more,” the clergyman announced to a rousing applause.

The clergy relayed a press statement cautioning all Christians involved in galamsey to desist from the practice.

The statement also asked the relevant authorities to play their roles effectively and dispassionately to end the menace.
