The West African Examination Council (WAEC) has refuted claims government has system in place to fail Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) candidates in the future to cut down the number of entrants into various Senior High Schools (SHSs), following the implementation of free policy set to begin in September this year.

“It must be noted that WAEC is an international autonomous body so it is not possible for the government to manipulate our system so that more candidates will intentionally fail”, an official stated.

According to the Head of Ghana National Office of WAEC, it is absolutely impossible for the government to influence the marking scheme and come out with such results as being bandied around.

“There are procedures in doing our work and I do not think anyone, even the WAEC staff can manipulate results“, Rev. Nii Nmai Ollennu stated.

A former Deputy Minister under erstwhile National Democratic Congress administration and current lawmaker for Bodi Constituency in the Western Region, Hon. Samson Ahi claims government intends to manipulate BECE results to cut cost of free SHS policy scheduled for September this year.

But Rev. Nii Nmai Ollennu, speaking to Ultimate FM’s morning show, rubbished such claims made by the lawmaker insisting that WAEC as an independent body has policies in place in conducting its examinations within the West African Sub Region.

“I do not want to be dragged into politics but it is not true any government can manipulate the system to fail any candidate”, he insisted.
