Welfare of members prime concern - W/R GNAT

Fijai (W/R), Dec 2, GNA - The Western Regional branch of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has assured members particularly in the Sekondi-Takoradi area that it would continue to seek their best interest.

Addressing a news conference at Fijai near Takoradi on Thursday, Mrs Theresa Naana Dadzie, Regional Chairperson of GNAT, called on the Coalition of Concerned Teachers (CCT), a group within the branch to abandon its stand, which she said could drag the name of the leadership of the Associations into the mud.

She said the doors of the Association were wide open for members and the public to discuss and seek clarification on issues they did not understand.

Mrs Dadzie was reacting to allegations of dereliction of duty and financial impropriety by the GNAT leadership in the region by the CCT. Other allegations included over staying in office of some executives with some living comfortably at the expense of teachers welfare among others.

Mrs Dadzie denied any wrong doing by the executives and said revenue from the use of the Teachers Hostel and up to date financial records on its activities and projects were available for perusal.

She said so far 2.6 billion cedis had been spent of on the 1,000 sitting capacity GNAT auditorium, which was almost completed and not seven billion cedis as alleged by the CCT.

"Most unfortunately CCT that is aware of the due process of redress in Mr. Joseph E. Amissah GNAT Regional Secretary said efforts earlier to meet CCT members to resolve the issue proved futile because "some of them have taken entrenched position".

He said, "we have never closed our doors to members who approach us for explanations over issues that worry them". 2 Dec 05
