Enchi (W/R), Aug 28, - Mr Seidu Adamu, Deputy Regional Minister, opened the 25th Western Regional inter-district basic education sports festival at Enchi at the weekend. Participants at the week-long festival will compete in soccer, volleyball, netball, table tennis, and athletics. Mr Adamu said the regional co-ordinating council has approved an increase in the sports levies in basic schools from 300 to 500 cedis a year per pupil. He warned against the use of drugs in sports and called on the youth to join the national crusade against the use of dangerous drugs among school children. He urged the participants to give of their best to enable them to win laurels for themselves, their schools and districts. In the opening soccer match, Aowin-Suaman district beat Nzema East district 3-2 on penalties. Mercy Tawiah of Wassa West District won the opening girls 1,500 metres race in five minutes four seconds. Gifty Apewosika of Mpohor Wassa East district was second in five minutes five seconds and Rose Boateng of the same district, third in five minutes ten point eight seconds.
