What JJ Rawlings said about his real surname back in 2020

We all knew him as Jerry John Rawlings, but surprisingly, the name we revered was not actually his original one.

The surname of Ghana’s late President, Jerry John Rawlings, which has been widely known and pronounced for years, was not his birth name.

In an old video resurfacing on social media, the late former President in July 2020 clarified that his surname was not Rawlings, but rather John.

According to him, “Rawlings” was a name he adopted to avoid legal complications and to facilitate his entry into the military.

The late statesman revealed that he was named after his father, James Ramsey John.

“I was born Jerry Rawlings John. I was named after my father, who is called James Ramsey John, a chemist from Castle Douglas, Scotland. When I applied to join the Armed Forces, they replied to me, and then they switched the position of John and Rawlings,” he explained.
