Whistleblower in Trouble

The NPP Member of Parliament for Asikuma-Odobeng-Brakwa, Collins Appiah Ofori is demanding the dismissal of the Executive Secretary of the Revenue Agencies Governing Board, RAGB, Harry Owusu unless the Board makes public, an audit it conducted on Unique Trust Financial services, now known as UT Financial Services.

The MP who is famed for fighting corruption is showing interest in the audit report because of allegations of stamp duty evasion being made against UT by a whistle blower, one Daniel Thomas Darko. Mr. Darko raised an alarm this afternoon that his life is in danger after his identity was revealed by UT Financial Services and the RAGB.

The Whistle blower, Mr. Daniel Thomas Darko was summoned to report at the CID unit of the police Headquarters in Accra today for allegedly threatening a staff of UT Financial Services. Investigation at the Police headquarters revealed that Mr. Darko failed to turn-up, almost four hours after he was due to report. Ms Sophia Lasi, the UT staff who made the report also failed to appear around the same time. Ms Lasi is accusing Mr. Darko of sending threatening text messages to her. But Mr. Darko said his refusal to report to the police is because he feared the police invitation was a trap or a calculated attempt to physically harm him. However, PC Appiah-Ofori who says he is prepared to stand surety for Mr. Darko in case of arrest is unhappy that Mr. Darko’s name is now in public domain. This according to him contravenes provisions under the whistle blowers act.

PC Appiah Ofori revealed in an interview with the World@5 that he is writing to the Executive Secretary of the Revenue Agencies Governing Board Harry Owusu who audited UT to make its findings public immediately. Mr. Owusu in a letter to the whistle blower a few weeks ago says he is under no obligation to publish the findings on UT, but rather he is enjoined by the oath of secrecy, to protect those they deal with.
