Tongo(UER), Oct.31, GNA - Mr Sebastian Tibil Bisnab, Talensi-Nabdam District Chief Executive, on Monday appealed to the Government to implement the White Volta River Development Scheme Project at Pwalugu initiated in the 1960s as an alternative source of energy in the country.

He explained that the project was initiated to make available adequate and sustainable electricity power for effective industrial growth of Ghana and in addition, to provide irrigation facilities to increase food production to alleviate poverty in the Upper East Region. Mr Bisnab made the appeal at the inauguration of the Talensi-Nabdam District Assembly at Tongo.

He said the assembly would soon set up a committee of eminent citizens in the area chaired by Sakoti Naba Sugri Bewong, Paramount Chief of Sakoti Traditional Area to coordinate with the Ministry of Energy on the viability of the project and execute it to curtail the perennial energy crisis in the country.

President John Agyekum Kufour, in an address read on his behalf urged the assemblies to be in the forefront to create awareness among the citizens on their responsibilities to pay taxes to develop the country.

He asked the members to be diligent, dedicated, and accountable to their people to help create a healthy environment for development. President Kufuor urged them to work in harmony to move the district and nation forward.

Sakoti Naba Sugri Bewong, who is also the Vice President of Upper East Region House of Chiefs, appealed to the people to eschew ethnic sentiments and rather fight for peace and total development of the area and the country.

Meanwhile, the assembly failed to elect a Presiding Member and proceedings were adjourned to Thursday, November 9.
