Ten years of hard work and glory is on the line, as Ghana’s foremost investigative journalists, Anas Aremeyaw Anas has for the first time been subjected to dangerous ridicule by an indigenous businessman and small scale miner, Nana Kwadwo Ofosu-Aryeh, who became the latest hit for the Crusading Guide’s investigative journalist.
Nana Ofosu Aryeh, who is the owner of two legally-registered companies, Europa Pee Company Limited, and Asukese Mining Limited, has flatly denied a claim made on Monday by Anas Aremeyaw Anas, in his Crusading Guide newspaper that the businessman had attempted to bribe him.
Reacting to the story in a chat with The Informer, the small scale miner said, he paid an amount of GH?13,000 to a lawyer of his business partner and a debt collection agent of the partner, for an amicable settlement of a business dispute, only for the partners to blackmail him by misinforming the Police and causing a publication in The New Crusading Guide story to tarnish his reputation.
An angry Nana Ofosu Aryeh insisted that Anas Aremeyaw Anas lied to the Ghanaian public when he published on the front page of The New Crusading Guide newspaper that he (Nana) had attempted to bribe him (Anas) with an amount of US$9,000.
“Who is this guy (Anas)? I’ve never seen him before, talk less of giving him $9,000, to do what for me? I don’t need him to resolve my business issues. Is he a Policeman for me to bribe to influence Police investigations? He should go back to school to learn the job,” Nana Ofosu busted out in anger, when The Informer probed his encounter with Anas.
In the presence of his lawyer, Mr. Vincent Aikins, Senior Partner at First Law chambers, the businessman explained that his business partner in the United States of America, in April this year sent him a wrong module of a 1994 caterpillar excavator, (325 BL) contrary to his order for a caterpillar 330 BL which he had agreed to pay US$90,000 for.
Evidence of Nana Owusu’s annoyance, at the turn of events, is well captured on his phone, via text messages exchanged between him and his partner.
After clearing the machine from the Tema Port, specialists from CAT in Kumasi ruled the Caterpillar as not fit for usage, after inspection. The machine was too old and had been overused so had complicated mechanical and electrical faults. The U.S-based supplier apologised via another sms message and agreed to supply the accurate Caterpillar module (BL 330 BL).
Henry L.Mensah, the U.S-based partner, was to make arrangements to retrieve the machine, after the deal had been consummated with the supply of the original module.
It was at this stage that Nana Ofosu Aryeh wired an amount of US$45,000 to the U.S based partner, Henry L. Mensah.
The story, as Nana recounted, continued that the supplier failed to fulfil his part of the obligation and after a while demanded that his Ghana-based counterpart pay extra money before the required Caterpillar will be shipped, failing which a contingent of Police cum hired macho-men from Accra and Kumasi stormed Nana’s mining site, at Enyaaso, near Konongo to retrieve the parked, unusable and unused machine.
In order to stop the potential of losing his investments made to his U.S.-based partner, Nana agreed with the lawyer and agent of his U.S based partner, to pay for the cost of the operation, and be in possession of the machine until the dispute is amicably settled between the two parties.
After some negotiations the two parties agreed on amount of US$9,000 for which reason Nana Ofosu Aryeh had to be excused to go to his bankers and did return with the agreed amount.
It was at this stage that the local partners of Henry L. Mensah invited the Police to make the arrest and cause the false publication that Anas Aremeyaw Anas made on Monday, ostensibly to scandalise the businessman, take possession of the caterpillar and refuse to refund the monies wired to the partner, including expenses made in clearing the machine from the port.
