Prominent Ghanaian sports journalist, Saddick Adams, has voiced his concerns over the government's decision to reintroduce road tolls after previously abandoning them.

He lamented the significant funds wasted on demolishing tollbooth structures that were used to generate revenue for the government.

Adams questioned how the government plans to finance the construction of new tollbooths with the reintroduction of road tolls.

“Who’ll pay for the reconstruction of the demolished tollbooths???” he wrote on his X page.

This follows the announcement by the Minister for Finance, Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam, about the government's plans to reintroduce road and bridge tolls in 2025.

During the mid-year budget presentation on July 23, Dr. Amin Adam mentioned that discussions are ongoing to develop a framework for road and bridge tolls.

He highlighted that the reintroduction aims to implement a modernised and efficient tolling system.

The collection of road tolls was halted in 2021 following a directive by the former Roads and Highways Minister, Kwesi Amoako-Atta, aligning with the government's proposal to abolish tolls as announced by the former finance minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, during the 2022 budget presentation.

However, in May 2024, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia called for the reintroduction of road tolls to generate revenue for road infrastructure.
