A former Member of Parliament for Asante Akim North, Andy Kwame Appiah-Kubi, has criticised what he believes was a lenient bail condition given to the Member of Parliament for Asutifi North, Ebenezer Addo, over alleged involvement in galamsey activities.

Speaking on TV3 on Saturday, November 8, 2025, the former lawmaker questioned why the bail conditions appear to vary, given that the offense allegedly committed by the Asutifi North MP is similar to that faced by Chairman Wontumi in relation to illegal mining.

Asutifi North MP breaks silence over alleged involvement in mob attack on soldiers

“… To me, that is a story in itself because when people are alleged to have committed the same offense, they are hit with conditions of bail that are over and above the figures you mentioned. How come that it's GH¢150,000 for one person when it is GH¢10 million for another person for similar offenses?” he queried.

Appiah-Kubi, the lawyer for Chairman Wontumi, the Ashanti Regional New Patriotic Party (NPP) Chairman, added that if the government has set a high bail standard for offenses related to illegal mining, it should apply the same standard to people within its own government who are accused of the same.

He further accused the government of being selective in applying bail conditions.

“Well, the standard they have set for offenders or accused persons in these areas are quite high and I expect them to also maintain and make sure that they don't discriminate against accused persons from different parts of the country and for different sites. Well, he [Wontumi] is one of the people also facing criminal charges in these areas and the bail conditions are public knowledge.

“What I am saying is that if these are the standards they've set for themselves, then let the standards prevail in all situations. Abetment of crime, conspiracies, they carry almost the same sanctions if you're proven guilty so, if you are an abettor or instigator, you are also in the same boat as the activists in the allegations," he said.

He further added that, “So, I'm sure that we have to be consistent so that we know that we are fighting a cause that is to the heart of all people in Ghana and when we are selectively prosecuting and selectively giving conditions, that does not help the effort.”

Appiah-Kubi added that he hopes that the case against the Asutifi North MP leads to prosecution and that it is not abandoned.

“… I want to believe that they follow it up with prosecution to the end and let's see what comes out of it,” he said, hopeful.

His remarks follow a bail condition set by an Accra High Court for Ebenezer Kwaku Addo, the Asutifi North MP, in the sum of GH¢150,000 after he was arraigned in court.
