Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has explained why he prefers to be addressed as 'Osahene' Alexander Afenyo-Markin.
According to him, while it is not a chieftaincy title, it was conferred on him by his uncle, the Omanhene of the Efuttu Traditional Council.
He insists that he should henceforth be referred to as Osahene in the legislative house, as he has earned the title.
However, Osahene Alexander Afenyo-Markin did not elaborate on the meaning of the title.
“Mr. Speaker, when filling the registration form, you are required to indicate your title, whether Dr., Mr., Alhaji, Professor, or others. Mr. Speaker, if the Honourable Majority Whip so pleases, I shall provide, for the purpose of the Hansard, the origin of my title, Osahene. It is a title conferred on me by my uncle, the Omanhene of the Efuttu Traditional Council, and I am obligated to use it. I prefer to use that title, so I do not believe you should have any problem with it.
I am part of that family; he is my uncle. The title was not conferred on me in private—it was done by the traditional council through official customs. It is not a chieftaincy title. It is not a chieftaincy title. Mr. Speaker, I rest my case. I wish to be addressed not as Mr. but as Osahene Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, as I have indicated on my form. It is my title, just as others choose to be addressed as Mr., Dr., or Alhaji because they have earned it,” he stated.
