Why Kumasi Mayor is reintroducing sanitation guards

The Mayor of Kumasi, Richard Ofori Agyemang Boadi, has outlined plans by city authorities to deploy sanitation guards, popularly referred to as “Nsamansaman,” across communities in the metropolis from July 2026 as part of renewed efforts to improve sanitation.

He bemoaned the continued dumping of waste into drains by some residents, even as authorities arrest and prosecute offenders

In an interview with the media on Monday, June 8, 2026, he explained that the move forms parts of efforts to ensure compliance with sanitation regulations.

Agyemang Boadi further noted that the deployment forms part of broader interventions to address poor sanitation practices and safeguard the city from environmental and public health risks.

“From July 1, we will bring back the “Nsamansaman“ that we used to experience in Kumasi. ... As soon as we arrest people from the neighborhoods at 11 o'clock, we move straight to court," he noted.
