Sierra Leone’s top opposition candidate receives medical treatment in Ghana

FREETOWN, Sierra Leone — An official says that Sierra Leone’s top opposition presidential candidate has returned home after receiving medical treatment in Ghana.

Julius Maada Bio’s condition suddenly deteriorated after he sustained a head injury ahead of a rally two weeks ago.

An eyewitness says police fired into the crowd, and police said one person was killed. Bio later addressed the crowd wearing a head bandage.

Opposition secretary-general Sulaiman Banja Tejan-Sie said Monday that Bio was ruled physically fit to return.

The retired general will challenge President Ernest Bai Koroma in next year’s poll. He ruled the West African country briefly in 1996 after a military junta seized power in a coup.
