Former President John Mahama, the Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has challenged Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who is also the Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), to provide furniture for pupils in schools in the Upper West Region, just as he did while in opposition.

Mahama accused Dr. Bawumia of engaging in populist acts during his time as Running Mate to then candidate Akufo-Addo, where he would visit schools in the northern parts of the country that lacked furniture, supply them, and take pictures to showcase his generosity.

In a video shared on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Mahama, while on his campaign in the northern part of the country, questioned why Dr. Bawumia has stopped donating furniture, especially at a time when 1.3 million basic school pupils in the country lack proper furniture in schools.

"Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, when he was Running Mate to Akufo-Addo, used to roam around the Upper West Region looking for schools without furniture. He would see children sitting on stones, take pictures, and say, 'I visited this school, and they didn’t have furniture. The NDC has failed to provide furniture.' During the NDC’s time, he would visit and donate furniture to the school.

"Today, 1.3 million basic school children in Ghana have no furniture. Yet, he is in charge of the budget. He doesn’t even need to use his own money to donate the furniture; he can allocate funds from the budget to buy furniture for those children. Why is he not doing so? I challenge him to visit schools in the Upper West that lack furniture and provide them, just like he did when he was in opposition."
