Why we need an unexplained wealth law - Edem Senanu

Edem Senanu, Co-Chair of the Citizens Movement Against Corruption, is calling for the introduction of an unexplained wealth law as part of efforts to strengthen Ghana's anti-corruption framework.

Speaking on TV3's Keypoints, he said such a law would help authorities question assets that cannot be linked to known income sources.

"We need a proper unexplained wealth law with reverse burden of proof to make these cases easier to run," he said.

He explained that under such a system, individuals would be required to account for the origin of their assets when questioned by investigators.

According to him, this would improve the ability of institutions to pursue financial misconduct cases that are often difficult to prove under existing frameworks.

He added that similar models exist in other jurisdictions and could be adapted locally to strengthen enforcement.
