Prof Naana Jane in a hearty moment with one of the market women
Recent claims by the Majority Leader in Parliament that Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang was chased away by market women at Winneba have been strongly refuted by a former deputy minister, Abu Kansangbata.
Providing evidence to the contrary, Kansangbata said that Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, the 2024 National Democratic Congress (NDC) running mate, visited the market in Winneba as part of her campaign activities.
The visit aimed to engage with market women and discuss their concerns and needs.
Following the visit, the Majority Leader, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, claimed that Prof. Naana Jane was chased away by the market women, suggesting a negative reception.
Abu Kansangbata, who accompanied Prof. Naana during the visit, has categorically denied these allegations.
Speaking on Home Radio in Wa, Abu Kansangbata asserted that the claims of Prof. Naana being chased away are completely false.
He emphasized that "there was no such incident and that the engagement was, in fact, very successful."
Kansangbata also said that the market women were rather welcoming and appreciative of Prof. Naana Jane’s visit.
"They were happy about her position as the running mate and expressed their support," he added.
To substantiate his statements, Kansangbata pointed to pictorial evidence showing the market women’s positive interactions with the NDC running mate.
"These images demonstrate the love and support shown by the community. In fact, MP Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin was present in the morning and left before the NDC came around to carry out their activities in the constituency.
"Therefore, he was not present during the engagement and cannot accurately make the assertions he did," he stressed.
Kansangbata also criticized Afenyo-Markin, who is also the Member of Parliament for Effutu, for engaging in what he described as "malicious and wicked politics in the Central Region.
During the visit, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang spoke about the creation of a Women Development Bank, which she described as a strategic initiative to support women enterprises and women empowerment in Ghana.
This initiative was well received by the market women and highlighted the positive and impactful nature of the engagement.
Abu Kansangbata has recommended that media outlets and individuals verify the facts before spreading unverified claims.
