Mr Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, Member of Parliament for Assin Central Constituency, has encouraged students of Winneba Secondary School (Winnesec), to take their education seriously to become useful and patriotic citizens in future.
Mr Agyapong who chaired the 2024 Speech and Prize-Giving Day of the school, which also marked the 75th Anniversary celebrations, further urged the students to aim higher and work towards achieving their goals.
The day on the theme: “Enhancing Quality Education Through Science, Technology and Innovation: The Role of Stakeholders,” was attended by personalities including Neenyi Ghartey VII Effutu Oma Odefe, Old Students and Effutu Municipal Chief Executive Alhaji Zubairu Kassim, Parents Association Executives.
Mr Agyapong, who is also an Alumnus of the school, said many people through a dint of hard work, had made it in life and were contributing to improve the lots of people with respect and empathy for human beings.
He urged the students to eschew all forms of negative activities and concentrate on their education for them to also support others in future, adding that it was never too late to be bold and say “no” to activities that would jeopardise future.
Mr Hayford Mensah Tetteh, Headmaster of the School said Winnesec was established in 1949 with 21 students with the aim of educating and training the young generation to become responsible individuals who could take up various positions to help build the country.
According to him the school had lived up to its mandate of producing many high-profile personalities in top positions in Ghana and the international arena.
The journey, Mr Tetteh stated, had not been easy, particularly, dealing with indiscipline among students, but 75 years of offering quality education was worth celebrating.
Currently, he noted, the school had a total population of 3220, including 1752 females reading subjects like General Science, General Arts, Home Economics, Visual Arts, General Agriculture and Business.
On academic performance, Mr Tetteh stated that the school obtained 94.5 percent passes in 6-8 subjects in the2023 WASSCE with 546 of the 960 candidates scoring A1.
He thanked all who in diverse ways had supported the school and prayed for continued support to aid in creating a conducive environment for teaching and learning.
Mr Charles Aheto-Tsegah Chairman, Board of Governors, Mr Alexander Kojo Anderson representative of Winnesec Old Students Association (WOSA)-North America, Mr Emmanuel Essuman Central Regional Director of Education, Alhaji Kassim Zubairu Effutu MCE, WOSA SSS 94 Group, Mr Emmanuel Sam Odum Jnr WOSA National President were among others who presented goodwill messages.
Rev Alexander Danso Ohemeng, President, WOSA 94 Group, host of the anniversary, in a report, appealed to all old students of the school to continue to adopt and refurbish the structures of the school to keep them in good shape.
Later, Mr Agyapong joined Mr Odum Jnr and others to unveil a legacy project of the anniversary; a new Science Laboratory for the school as its contribution to quality science and technology education.
