The National Peace Council (NPC) has appealed to political parties to withdraw their supporters from collation centers nationwide.

This follows actions by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the incumbent New Patriotic Party (NPP), who had urged their supporters to gather at collation centers to prevent alleged vote rigging.

Currently, many party supporters are stationed at collation centers across the country. However, the NPC, in a statement, expressed concern that such actions could create tension and slow down the electoral process.

The statement read:

“The National Peace Council (NPC), the West Africa Network for Peacebuilding (WANEP), and other partners in the Election Situation Room are aware of calls from the two major political parties to their supporters to converge at the election collation centres to protect the ballots, Electoral Commission officials, and Security Service personnel at the centres.

The Election Situation Room is concerned about this regrettable development that could impede the work of electoral officers, unnecessarily delay the delivery of election results, and heighten tension at the collation centres.

It is essential that political parties exercise restraint by withdrawing their supporters from the collation centres and allow their accredited agents to observe the collation process.

The NPC calls on political parties to respect the electoral rules and to allow Electoral Commission personnel to carry out their duties with professionalism and integrity in order to deliver a free, fair, and transparent election.”

The NPC urges all stakeholders to prioritize peace and the smooth running of the electoral process.
