Madina, Jan 09, GNA - Two nurses, Dickson Otoo and Michael Agyekum, employees of Legon Hospital and Ridge Hospital respectively, have been arrested by the Madina Police for causing the death of Comfort Dede Aryee, 30, through abortion.

The Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) in-charge of the Madina District Police Headquarters, Mr Kwabena Antwi Bosiako, told the GNA that Comfort lived with the boyfriend, Mr Kofi Asare, at La Paz. In the course of their relationship, Comfort became pregnant and Asare decided to perform the marriage rites.

But Comfort kicked against the idea, saying that she belonged to a Pentecostal church that never allowed their women to get pregnant before marriage.

She wanted to terminate the pregnancy but Asare refused. Mr Bosiako said on the night of December 15, 2004, while both were in bed, the deceased complained of pains in the abdomen and Asare saw bloodstains on their bed-sheet.

When he questioned Comfort she confessed to have aborted the pregnancy at the "Liberty Clinic" at Ashaley Botwe. He took Comfort to the clinic where the nurses confirmed they had terminated the pregnancy.

The nursed gave Comfort a painkiller and assured the pain would subside. Her condition got worse the following day so Asare took her back to the clinic where it was noticed her breath was failing. Asare took her to the Achimota Hospital but Comfort died on arrival.

Otoo and Agyekum told police they were doing part-time work at the Liberty Clinic.
