Woman granted bail after 37 months in custody

Ajumako (C/R), Dec. 31, GNA - An Ajumako Magistrate's court presided over by Mr Kwesi Boakye Enimil has granted bail to Madam Comfort Gyasi, 40, who had been in prison custody for thirty-seven months. The plea of Madam Gyasi, who would re-appear before the court on January 15 2009, was not taken. The facts of the case as given by Chief Inspector Emmanuel Maxwell Akorli, prosecution, was that on April 14, 2005, Madam Gyasi and one Akua Sam had a fight, during which a four-months old baby of Akua Sam fell down.

The prosecution said the baby, Lawrence Boadu who had a head injury died on May 29 2005, after one and a half months at the Ajumako Besease Health Centre. Kojo Bronya who was at the scene of the fight was arrested together with Comfort Gyasi and later arraigned before the Ajumako Magistrate's court on May 30 2005, he said.

Chief Inspector Akorli said Kojo Bronya was however granted bail on 17 November 2005, while Comfort Gyasi was remanded in custody and the docket on her case forwarded to the Attorney Generals Department for advice.

The Magistrate granted her bail on December 17, 2008, when she was brought to the court on health grounds and also to enable her attend to her six children whom she had not seen since November 2005, the prosecution said.
