Woman remanded for issuing dud cheque

Accra, Nov. 4, GNA - A Circuit Court in Accra on Thursday remanded a 28-year-old unemployed woman for issuing a false cheque totalling 23,750,200 to one Mr. Richard Nartey.

Keren Happuch Kwakye, who was a sales girl at F and A Travel and Tours Limited in Accra, pleaded not guilty to the offence and was granted a 30 million cedi bail to reappear on November 5.

Prosecuting, Chief Inspector Benedicta Akolgo told the court presided over by Williwise Kyereme that sometime in April this year, the accused went to Cox and Kings Ghana Limited a travel and tour agency and collected three US air tickets totalling 4,554 US dollars. Mrs. Akolgo said the accused made an initial payment of 2,000 US dollars and issued an ADB cheque valued at 23,750,200 cedis equivalent to 2,554 US dollars.

She said the cheque was presented at the ADB Osu Branch in May this year but was dishonoured. All efforts made by the complainant to trace the accused proved futile.

Mrs. Akolgo said the complainant had information that the accused had been arrested and detained in another case at the CID Headquarters where she was identified to the police and was re-arrested.

The accused then admitted the offence and was granted police enquiry bail to be reporting to the police but she failed. Meanwhile, Mr Kyereme who was reported in the media last week to have resigned has, however, resumed work.
