Ho, July 25, GNA - Mrs Zaynab Joyce Mahama, Vice President of Women in Sports Association of Ghana (WOSPAG) on Saturday said that women who involve in sporting activities make better wives. She said this is because such women extend the "spirit" of sportsmanship of friendliness and even-temperance into their marriages to make the home lively and a place to yearn to be. Mrs Mahama said this when addressing mainly female students and workers as well as wives of Soldiers and Police officers who took part in a five-kilometer Health Walk in Ho. Three Keep Fit Clubs in Ho Municipality also took part in the Health Walk.

Mrs Mahama urged men to encourage their wives and daughters to go into sports to stay healthy at all times. The over two-hour Walk was organized by the WOSPAG in collaboration with the National Sports Council to sensitize women and girls on regular exercises.

Mrs Mahama underscored the importance of good health to the socio-economic development of the country and advised women and girls to join Keep Fit Clubs to enable them exercise regularly, "at least 30 minutes a week."

She noted that women and girls were most vulnerable to diseases and asked them to make time out of their busy schedules to exercise to remain fit to perform their numerous especial domestic activities. "If every woman is fit, production will grow and our socio-economic development will improve," Mrs Mahama stated. Miss Doris Afari, a Physical Education Tutor at Mawuli School debunked perceptions that women and girls in sports do not normally produce children, saying that exercises rather make sporty women give birth to healthy and intelligent children.

She urged female students to get involved in sporting activities and take advantage of opportunities that abound in the area. Dr. Anthony Ashinyo, a Medical Officer at the Volta Regional Hospital in a health talk encouraged the public, especially women and girls to regularly check the status of their health especially for breast cancer, hepatitis B and sexually transmitted and related diseases.

Mr Gabriel Yao Missodey, Volta Regional Sports Development Officer said his office would soon organize sporting activities in the Region and appealed to women and girls to get involved in such activities. 25 July 09
