Bernard Antwi Boasiako (Chairman Wontumi) - Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman
The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako aka ‘Chairman Wontumi,’ has stated that his recent detention by the police has rekindled the spirit of the party’s members to capture power from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the November polls.
Addressing hundreds of NPP faithful that thronged the regional office along the Krofrom-Ash Town Road, Wontumi said his arrest was masterminded by political opponents to disrupt the activities of the NPP.
He was arrested by the police for allegedly assaulting Collins Amankwa, Member of Parliament (MP) for Manhyia North.
Wontumi claimed that plans of the NDC, particularly President John Mahama, to disrupt the activities of the NPP through his (Wontumi) arrest had failed.
He said his detention would motivate the NPP’s members in the Ashanti region, the party’s stronghold to work hard, noting that the NPP members were poised to vigorously campaign to capture power from the NDC.
“The NDC members thought that if they arrest Wontumi, the NPP in the Ashanti region will collapse but that has failed miserably because what I have seen here today indicates that we are ready to capture political power.
The NPP chairman said the NDC had adopted fiendish tactics to overpower the NPP in the Ashanti region, stressing that threats and intimidations cannot undermine the efforts of the NPP in the region.
“I am now ready to lead the party to campaign massively to win 90 percent of valid votes in the Ashanti region, and the party’s members must rise and work for the NPP,” he said.
According to him, President Mahama wants to adopt dubious means to ensure victory in the upcoming polls, noting that the party was ready to capture power to lessen the plight of Ghanaians.
“The NDC can’t stop the NPP from winning the next elections, they are just delaying our imminent victory,” he told the enthusiastic party members, stressing that “change is coming this year.”
Wontumi urged the NPP’s supporters to be vigilant and monitor the ongoing limited voter registration exercise and all other Electoral Commission (EC) programmes so that the party would not be taken unawares.
He thanked the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II and all residents of the Ashanti region for rallying behind him during his detention.
NDC Panics
Acting National Chairman, Freddie Blay stated that NDC would suffer an embarrassing defeat during the November general elections, noting that the ruling party was taking desperate steps to avert the defeat after mismanaging the affairs of the state.
Mr. Blay, who is adored by NPP’s members in Kumasi, disclosed this while addressing hundreds of NPP supporters that thronged the party’s Ashanti Regional office on Wednesday.
The NPP faithful converged on the party’s office to give a rousing welcome to Wontumi after he was granted bail in the assault case.
Mr. Blay said that the time has come for Ghanaians to change the leadership of the country, saying that “the NDC will go to opposition this year, irrespective of their actions.”
The seasoned lawyer also described Wontumi’s arrest as a calculated attempt by the NDC to distract the NPP from winning the next elections, noting that those plans would not materialize.
