Work begins on lecture theatre for Institute of Languages

Accra, May 18, GNA--Work has began on a three billion cedis lecture theatre for the Ghana Institute of Languages at Legon near Accra. The theatre complex which contains languages laboratory, audio visual rooms, lecture halls, a stage and conference room would house students of the Institute who are currently located at the Accra City Campus of the University of Ghana.

Mr. Kwadwo Baah-Wiredu, Minister of Education, Youth and Sports who visited the site to inspect work so far done stated that the complex is expected to be completed in one-and-a-half years time. He said the project is being finance through the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund).

Mr. Baah-Wiredu gave assurance that government would work around the clock to provide the necessary infrastructure to enhance teaching and learning in the country.

Mr. Ohene Asiedu, the site engineer assured the minister that he work hard to ensure the completion of the project on schedule.

Mr. Baah-Wiredu later visited the La Presbyterian Senior Secondary School where he interacted with students and staff to learn at first hand problems, which resulted in the poor performance of candidates who sat for the 2003 SSSCE.

The school placed last in the recent grading of Senior Secondary Schools by the Ghana Education in Greater Accra Region last year. Mr. Baah-Wiredu therefore, asked both the staff and students to redouble their efforts to improve upon the school's academic performance this year.

He announced that a British Company, Three Cs, which is to undertake a hostel project at the University of Ghana, Legon has agreed to construct a three classroom block for the school. Mr. Baah.Wiredu however, called on the school's authorities to keep the compound clean at all times to ensure the proper health of the students.

Mr. Nii Lante Cleland, Assistant headmaster of the school thanked the Minister for his unannounced visit and appealed to him to ensure that more classrooms are constructed to create conducive atmosphere for teaching and learning.
