Accra, June 27, GNA - Encroachers on the land earmarked for the construction of the Accra Harbour project on Friday resolved to vacate to enable construction to begin in August.

Nii Teiko Tagoe, Director, Old Accra Conservation Development Project, speaking at a consultative meeting with leaders of the various unions denied allegations that squatters were paying rents to the Ghana National Fishermen's Council.

Nii Tagoe said funds had been made available for the commencement of the project and that general engineering works on the land had already begun.

He said the harbour would have facilities such as store rooms, cold stores, sheds, premix station and early childhood development centre. The project is an initiative of the Ministry of Fisheries to improve 14 landing sites in the country.

Nii Tagoe called on the various unions to unite and support the project to ensure successful completion adding that nobody should read politics into it.

He said the first phase of the project would be the rehabilitation of the breakwater which serves as a rock between land and sea, diverting water into the bay.
