Work on Sekyere West roads progresses

Mampong (Ash), April 5, GNA- The rehabilitation of roads in the Sekyere West district of Ashanti is progressing steadily, Mr Thomas Edward Atakorah, the District Chief Executive, has announced.

He said the rehabilitation of the roads, when completed would facilitate the transportation of people and foodstuff from the hinterlands to the urban centres.

Addressing the first ordinary meeting of the Sekyere West District Assembly at Asante-Mampong, Mr Atakorah named some of the roads as the Mampong-Nsuta, Mampong-Kofiase and Mampong-Oku, which, he said, would be completed by the end of this year.

The DCE said the contractor's inability to complete the roads on the originally scheduled date was partly due to human deficiency and therefore, urged the people to be patient and look forward to good things to come. Mr Atakorah disclosed that 34 additional boreholes were to be constructed in some selected communities under the second phase of the water and sanitation project.

Already, he said, 27 communities in the district had been provided with boreholes fitted with pumps in fulfilment of the Assembly's desire to ensure that the farming communities were rid of water-borne diseases. Mr Atakorah said the Assembly received 4.3 billion cedis as its share of the common fund and 1.5 billion cedis from the HIPC fund for last year. The amounts, he said, were used in the fields of education, health, water and sanitation.

The DCE told the Assembly that an amount of 940 million cedis was being sourced from the government for the rehabilitation of the Mampong lorry park to enable it meet modern standards.

He urged the Assembly members to lend their full support to the implementation of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) by assisting officers involved in the registration of members, pointing out that the scheme was the best option and most convenient way of accessing health care and therefore asked politicians not to read politics into it.
