Bawku, (Upper East) 12 Jan. '99, A sod-cutting ceremony has been held at Wiidi, near Bawku in the Upper East region, for work to begin on the provision of hand-pump wells for seven communities in the Bawku Central constituency at a cost of 7.7 million cedis. Hajia Fati Seidu, member of parliament for the area, said communities to benefit from the project include Gingande, Mazema, Campore, Sagabo, Votkom and Sabongari. Three other villages, Nakom, Mongo, and Mandago would have their small-scale dams rehabilitated to boost dry season farming and livestock rearing. Hajia Fati, who is also the deputy Upper East regional minister, said funds for the project would come from her share of the MP's common fund while the beneficiary communities are expected to provide communal labour. She said the provision of potable water for rural communities in her constituency is of topmost priority because of the high incidence of water-borne diseases in the area. Hajia Fati noted that most parts of the constituency lack potable water, especially during the dry season, and appealed to the Bawku East district assembly and non-governmental organisations (NGO's) to assist the people.
