Takoradi, April 23, GNA - A two-day workshop on the draft conditions of service of the Local Government Service opened in Takoradi on Saturday.
It was organised by the National Association of Local Authorities of Ghana (NALAG) in collaboration with the Office of the Administrator of the District Assembly Common Fund.
District Chief Executives, Members of Parliament and officials of the Ministry of Local Government attended it.
Opening the workshop, Mr George Kyei-Baffour, President of NALAG, commended the government for passing the Local Government Service Law. He said there was the need to ensure rapid implementation of the law for Local Government Authorities to deliver. Mr Kyei-Baffour who is the Presiding Member of the Asante-Akim North District Assembly, said the workshop was meant to collate views to improve the draft condition of service of the Local Government Service. Mr Joshua Magnus Nicole, Administrator of the District Assembly Common Fund, said the fund had been the most important and reliable revenue for district assemblies.
He said without its intervention, capital and development projects would be severely limited and the benefits of decentralization would not have been realized.
Mr Nicole said the fund has had the greatest impact in rural areas where local sources of finance are extremely limited ad needs are great. He noted that the fund is not a panacea but a complimentary source of finance for District assemblies. Mr Nicole said there was, therefore, the need to revamp internally generated fund for sustainability.
