Accra, 19 June, GNA - The United Nations has called for support and services for refugees to facilitate a better life for them. A statement issued in Accra to celebrate the World Refugee Day, which falls on June 20, said, "let us ensure that people displaced by conflict, persecution and upheaval get what they need to build a better life".

"Around the world, millions of people have been uprooted by violence, persecution and conflict. The majority of these individuals and their families come from the developing world and are also especially vulnerable to the harsh fallout of the unfolding global economic crisis."

The theme for the d ay is: "Real People, Real Needs"", which underscores how much refugees have lost -- even their countries -- and how much the humanitarian community must do to help them, the statement said.

The statement said there are gaps in meeting basic needs of refugees like shelter, health services, education, food, clean water, sanitation and protection from violence and abuse. It said malnutrition levels were frequently higher in displaced populations as well as mortality rate.

The statement said single women and girls were especially prone to exploitation. Experience showed that staying in school reduced exposure to such abuse and therefore more resources were needed to build and maintain education facilities for refugees.

"Addressing these and many other gaps takes commitment and action. Solidarity must be the foundation of our response. This is especially so at a time when the economic crisis is putting pressure on humanitarian and development budgets," the statement noted. 19 June 09
