YAWC Network embarks on a 40-day campaign against rape

The Young African Women Congress (YAWC) Network is set to embark on a massive campaign against rape in Africa. The campaign which is scheduled to begin from 18th June to 28th July 2020 will see a number of activities under the theme, “Stop Rape Campaign”.

Key among the activities will be the massive sensitization on the issue of rape through all available media channels including social media, radio, television, info-graphics, and community outreach.

Rape has become a topical issue in the media today due to recent reports of some devastating cases. However, we are aware that the rape culture is not a recent phenomenon and will not stop until every single individual is forewarned against any form of prejudice that seems to insight men to rape women/girls or make rape victims objects of the blame for their predicaments.

The campaign seeks to erode society’s faulty sexual orientation and socialization of girls and boys, challenge the efficacy of current laws against rape and push for stricter laws for rape crimes.

The campaign is being led by a Committee of astute men and women drawn from different organizations who are not only passionate about protecting women’s rights but also knowledgeable and experienced in human rights and African revolutionary movements.

The members of the steering committee are Daniel Osei Tuffuor, Executive Director of ExLA Group; Safia Musah, Programmes Officer at Star Ghana; Chief Abdul Moomen, Executive Creative Officer of Bambu Center; Vera Addo, Executive Director of VeraAddo Foundation; Noelyne Mensah, Executive Director of IGRED Ghana; Hardi Yakubu, Fighter General of the Economic Fighters League; Elvis Ampadu, Director of International Relations at ExLA Group and Legal Consultant and Yaa Aduba Asare, President of YAWC Network, Ghana Chapter.

Other activities that will mark the “Stop Rape Campaign” will include series of massive walks (All Males/All Females), petitions to appropriate quarters, and a drive to encourage victims to speak out.

The Campaign is expected to be championed in the West, East and Central Africa sub-regions where the YAWC Network, a movement of young women of African descent associated with the annual convocation of the Young African Women Congress (YAWC) organized by ExLA Group Gender Programme (EGGP), an agency under ExLA Group.
