The King and Overlord of Gonja, Yagbonwura Tuntumba Boresa I, has levied five Divisional Chiefs or sons of Ndewura Jakpa towards building a palace for the Gonja Kingdom at Nyange and has received commendations from his people.
Speaking on Bole-based Nkilgi FM, the Registrar of the Gonja Traditional Council Mr Abutu Kapori said Yagbonwura did not request that the Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia build a palace for Gonjas as being put across and that Yagbonwura only requested that District Assemblies be tasked to assist build the palace.
According to the Registrar, Yagbonwura has written letters to the seven sons of Ndewura Jakpa, that is Wasipewura, Kpembewura, Bolewura, Tuluwewura, Kusawguwura, Kongwura and Kandiawura to contribute 30,000 Ghana cedis each towards the redevelopment of Nyange the former Traditional capital of the Gonja Kingdom.
Mr Braimah Abass popularly called Prof speaking on the same platform , said the Gonja Traditional Council failed to utilize certain opportunities hence their inability to mobilise money to build the palace. He said any contribution from any District Assembly in Gonjaland is welcome but it should not be on record that they built the palace for Gonjas.
There is a raging debate among Gonjas on the issue of the palace with many disagreeing with Yagbonwura for requesting that the Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia to authorize District Assemblies in the Gonja area to build a modern palace at Nyange.
It was suggested the Yagbonwura should rather call on the people of Gonjaland across Ghana and the world to contribute in their own small way to embark on the redevelopment of Nyange instead of relying on politicians including the Vice President.
