President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has said an evaluation for the expansion of the Accra-Tema Motorway into a three-lane dual carriageway has been completed.

According to him, the project is awaiting approval from the Public Private Partnership Approval Committee of the Ministry of Finance to engage the contractor to commence work.

Speaking at the commissioning of the phase one of the Tema Motorway interchange on Friday June 5 2020, President Akufo said; “Evaluation for the expansion of the Accra–Tema Motorway into a three-lane dual carriageway with service roads under a Public Private Partnership arrangement has been completed. We are awaiting approval from the Public Private Partnership Approval Committee of the Ministry of Finance to engage the contractor”

“The economic benefits of these and many other trunk roads being undertaken by the Ghana Highways Authority, the Department of Urban Roads and the Department of Feeder Roads will be immense. Government is committed to the successful completion of all the projects, and I urge the Ministry of Roads and Highways to see to their expeditious completion,” President Akufo-Addo added.

The recently commissioned Tema Motorway interchange, which had a June 2020 deadline was financed by the Japanese government with an estimated US$56 million earmarked for the project.

Additionally, President Akufo-Addo had earlier tagged the year 2020 as the “Year of Roads.”

Speaking at a media encounter in December 2019, he flaunted his administration would embark on an aggressive road development across Ghana in 2020, saying “Next year is the year we will adopt as the year of roads.”

The president noted roads are critical in the development of any nation and that the development of the much-touted roads under the previous John Dramani Mahama administration was untrue.
