"Life is harder under Kufuor"
"Kufuor stop killing Ghanaians"
"Cocaine dealers go free but drivers are jailed"

Accra, Dec. 11, GNA - Thousands of people are marching in Accra to heed a call by the opposition pressure group, the Committee for Joint Action (CJA), to protest against high cost of living.

The demonstrators, who are clad in red with red headgears and arm bands, were singing and dancing to brass band music as they marched from the Kwame Nkrumah Circle through Farisco to the Hearts Park for a rally.

The protestors are carrying placards some of which read: "Life is harder under Kufuor", "Kufuor stop killing Ghanaians" "NPP, Bye, Bye" "Don't impose Chiefs on us"; "Arise Ghana," and "Yewuo".

Some also read: "Our fishermen are dying", "Cocaine dealers go free but drivers are jailed", and "Zero tolerance to truth".

They are citing rising utility tariffs and fuel prices and general economic hardships as reasons for the demonstration.

At the Farisco Traffic Lights, some of the protestors sat on the street while others danced to "kpanlogo" music and refused to leave, and the police looked on.

It took the intervention of some leading members of the CJA to convince them to join the rest of the marchers.

Mr. Kwesi Pratt Jnr, one of the leading members of the CJA, said they expected thousands of people to join the demonstration. Scores of policemen are with the marchers and directing traffic at intersections to ensure that the demonstration passes on peaceful and also causes minimum disruption of normal work.

The Ghana Police Service has warned that they would not tolerate any act of violence by any person to create tension before, during and after the demonstration.

Deputy Commissioner of Police, Mr K. A. Opare-Addo, said the Regional Police Command had information that some individuals intended to carry arms to defend themselves during the CJA march. He said the police would supply "protective facilities" for the demonstration, tagged "peaceful" by the CJA and advised demonstrators to obey the rules of the game and not create any situation to destroy the demonstration.
