Vice-President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has teased a Justice of the Supreme Court, Justice William Atuguba by jokingly turning around the latter’s popular cliche ‘You and I were not there’, when the two met at a public function Friday.
Mr. Bawumia acknowledging the presence of Justice Atuguba referred to him as ‘”You and I are now here” in reference to his famous Election Petition statement in court ‘You and I were not there’ amidst laughter during the launch of Tax and Good Governance Week at the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).
Dr Bawumia repeated the statement ‘You and I are now here to file our tax returns’
The Vice President, who used the occasion to file his tax returns for 2017 challenged the GRA to develop a mobile App to enable Ghanaians to file their Tax returns without walking to any GRA office by April 2019.
Tax returns are final submission on the economic activities of registered businesses and persons in relation to their tax obligation.
Dr Bawumia revealed that only 1.5 million out of 6 million tax payers currently pay their taxes in the country.
He described the development as worrying urging all prospective tax payers to honour their tax obligations to fast track development in the country.
The Vice President, Finance Minister, Ken Ofori Atta and other government officials used the occasion to file their tax returns as well.
On his part, the Commissioner General of GRA, Emmanuel Kofi Nti warned that persons who fail to file their tax returns by the end of April, 2018 will face sanctions.
