You boycotted, who cares? - Koku slams NDC over absence at James Town harbour commissioning

Former deputy General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) Koku Anyidoho has criticised the party's flagbearer and leadership of the party for absenting themselves at the commissioning of the James Town Fishing Harbour on Friday, September 13, 2024.

According to him, though the boycott by the NDC was unfortunate, it didn't take anything away from the well attended and impressive event.

"It is sad that certain persons who should have been at the commissioning yesterday, chose not to be there for political party reasons. It didn't stop the commissioning from taking place, and it hasn't stopped the fisherfolk from using the place. So you boycott it, who cares? Mother Ghana is moving forward, united we stand. There are more things that unite us than divide us. Ghana first, we will continue to build a better Ghana to the glory of God," Koku Anyidoho said in a video shared on social media platform X.

During a visit to the harbour a day after its commissioning, Koko Anyidoho, who once served as the Communications Director at the Presidency, could not hide his excitement about the facility, which will go a long way in boosting the fishing industry in the country.

"This is what the James Town fishing harbour looks like today. Those of you who know how it used to look cannot help but appreciate that something wonderful has happened here. The transformation is amazing, it is fantastic. It is all about Ghana, it doesn't matter the political party that does it. Once it is in the supreme interest of the Republic of Ghana, we need to support it. Governments will come and go, personalities will come and personalities will go. The important thing is that Mother Ghana must move forward and move forward in the right direction of positive possibilities. I am impressed, and I can't hide the fact that I am impressed," Koku Anyidoho added.

President Nana Akufo-Addo officially commissioned the long-awaited Jamestown Fishing Harbour on Friday, 13th September 2024.

The completion of this significant project, which has been in the making for decades, represents the fulfillment of a promise made by the Akufo-Addo government to revitalize Ghana’s fishing industry and improve the livelihoods of local fisherfolk.

The Jamestown Fishing Harbour, a state-of-the-art facility, has been eagerly anticipated since the 1960s, when discussions of constructing a modern fishing harbour for the area first began.

For years, these plans remained unrealized, leaving the people of Jamestown and the broader Ga community with unmet expectations.

However, the harbour today stands as a testament to the government’s commitment to action, with President Akufo-Addo proudly delivering on a decades-old promise.

The harbour, which is equipped with a range of modern facilities, is designed to address some of the long-standing challenges faced by Ghana’s artisanal fishing sector. These include the safe launching and landing of canoes, improved fish handling, and enhanced storage capacities.

Notable features of the port include a 200-capacity fish market, a 60-tonne ice-making plant, a 200-tonne cold store, and market stalls, among others.

A daycare centre has also been included to support women traders, allowing them to conduct their business with peace of mind, knowing their children are safe.
