Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has told the Presidential Candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Mahama, that “insults do not win votes.”
This comment comes as Bawumia responded to what he described as Mahama's reliance on insults in his politicking.
Former President Mahama has faced criticism from some members of the public, who argue that his language has been overly insulting in recent political exchanges.
This backlash arose after Mahama recently responded to Vice President Bawumia by accusing him of “running away from the economy.” Citing a famous line from Bill Clinton’s campaign, Mahama remarked, “It’s about the economy, stupid!”
Mahama’s retort followed Bawumia’s list of 50 questions aimed at him, in response to Mahama’s initial five questions on the economy.
Critics argue that, as a former head of state, Mahama should refrain from using language perceived as insulting.
While addressing supporters in the Ahafo Region during his campaign for the upcoming December 7 elections, Vice President Bawumia stated that no amount of insults from Mahama would guarantee him victory.
“Many people can see what’s coming, and some are afraid,” Bawumia said. “They are afraid because they are about to lose this general election. So, have you noticed the insults have started? There’s an Akan proverb that says, ‘You cannot buy a horse by talking too long.’ I’ll add that you cannot buy a horse with insults, either. Isn’t that so? You can insult us all you want, but it will be in vain. You will still lose the election. All indications point to that.”
