You couldn’t provide 12 hours of light, but you want to provide 24-hour economy - Akufo-Addo queries Mahama

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has dismissed the 24-hour economy policy, promoted by John Dramani Mahama, the NDC's presidential candidate, as a key proposal of the next NDC government.

Expressing his astonishment at the 24-hour economy being championed by the National Democratic Congress, Akufo-Addo questioned how John Mahama intends to implement such a policy when he disastrously failed to ensure consistent power supply for more than 12 hours, referencing the dumsor crisis.

Speaking during an engagement with professional bodies and party supporters in Kumasi at the beginning of his three-day tour of the Ashanti Region, Akufo-Addo explained that Ghanaians voted out the NDC because of their failure and poor performance.

“Today, he is staging a comeback. What is he coming to do? A 24-hour economy? You couldn’t keep the lights on for 12 hours during ‘dumsor’ when you were president, and now you are coming to give us a 24-hour economy? How are you going to do that? Please, don’t let anybody confuse you with these things,” he urged.

Akufo-Addo stressed on the trend where past presidents served two terms, while Mahama was voted out after just one term.

According to him, this alone speaks volumes about the performance of the previous Mahama-led NDC government.

“There are four other people who have had the blessing of the Almighty and the support of the people of Ghana to become presidents. Jerry John Rawlings had a second term, John Agyekum Kufuor had a second term, and I have had a second term. The only one who was not given a second term was John Dramani Mahama. There is a reason for that—because Ghanaians were unhappy about his abysmal performance, which is why he was voted out,” he explained.

Akufo-Addo is hopeful his vice president, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, will take over from him as president after the December 7 elections.
