Dr. Kwaku Afriyie, the Member of Parliament for Sefwi Wiawso, has disclosed that the actions of the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, against him on the floor of Parliament on Monday, July 22, 2024, constitute a total humiliation of him and his constituents.

According to him, Alban Bagbin showed gross belittlement of him and his constituents with the way he addressed him on the floor of Parliament.

Dr. Kwaku Afriyie, who maintains that he was in the right with his objection to the Speaker’s comment, explained that he is willing to shoulder the disgrace but is not prepared to alter his stance that Alban Bagbin should not have uttered the words he did during his announcement of the nomination of new Supreme Court justices by President Akufo-Addo.

In a Joy News interview, Dr. Kwaku Afriyie announced that he was not going to take further actions against Alban Bagbin as he is not confident that any such move would result in something significant.

“I want to speak to the substance of the issue and not how I was treated. That is a small amount of humiliation that I’m willing to suffer. I feel humiliated and my people too were humiliated. That’s why I said that I was brought up in a palace and referenced my constituency, and he said he represented Ghana.

“I represent the people of Sefwi Wiawso, so if you humiliate their representative from speaking his opinion on a matter of procedure and process, then I will stand by it,” he said.

Alban Bagbin ordered the removal of Kwaku Afriyie, the Member of Parliament for Sefwi Wiawso after he supposedly made contemptuous remarks in Parliament.

The incident occurred following the Speaker's announcement of new Supreme Court judge nominations.

While the microphone did not capture the specifics of Afriyie’s comments, Speaker Bagbin evidently found them disrespectful and subsequently instructed the MP to leave the chamber, the report added.

"I will not entertain such disrespect. Marshal, please take him out," the Speaker ordered.
